4 Steps to Overcome Comparisonitis as an Online Entrepreneur
You’ve probably heard the statement “don’t compare your behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel”. Yet when we know we shouldn’t do something, It can be tricky to figure out how to stop looking at the success of those around us and compare them with our own. So let’s talk about how to overcome this nasty barrier to success as an online entrepreneur – COMPARISONITIS!Social media tends to be the strongest highlight reel out there. We are flooded with posts of engaged and pregnant colleagues, friends quitting their 9-5’s, and other entrepreneurs traveling across the world. It can be so easy to feel envious and wonder if they have something we don’t. This nasty comparison trap that we fall into creates a terrible feeling. So here are some tips to help you avoid that trap next time you come across it!!!!
1. Focus on What You Have
Take time every week to write a list of the things you’re really proud to have. Start with 10 things each week and watch how this has an effect on your life. Writing a list like this helps us remind ourselves about the beauty in our lives. It gives us the opportunity to focus on the amazing things we do have that we might otherwise not have been able to appreciate.
2. Set SMART Goals
SMART goals are ones that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Here are some examples…
GOOD EXAMPLE: I want to sign 3 1-on-1 clients by the end of this month
BAD EXAMPLE: I want a thriving business
In the first example, it is very clear what this person needs in order to accomplish the goal. In the second example, it is a challenging goal to reach for many reasons. What is considered a thriving business? When do you want it to be thriving by?
I want you to think about your plan for yourself and make sure you are setting SMART goals. When we know exactly where we are trying to go, it becomes much easier not to compare ourselves to others. We know where we are going and we know what we are doing to get there!
3. Keep In Mind That You Have a Game Plan
Comparing ourselves to others holds us back. In fact, it takes us further away from our goals. When we see people succeeding before us, it can be easy to want to switch lanes and follow them. This shakes our rhythm, meddles with our plan, and doesn’t take into account that every person and business is different! What works for one person might not work for another. So following someone else may do more harm than good!! Have patience, stick to your own path, your own pace and follow the vision you’ve set for yourself.
4. Compare Yourself to Yourself
We are all different. The paths we are on are different, our businesses are different, and WE as people are different! Instead of looking at and comparing yourself to others, try and compare yourself to yesterday’s version of you. As you go through that process, remember that someone else’s success is NOT your failure! There is room for everyone at the finish line. So never allow yourself to be discouraged that someone else is already there. The only way for you to get to the finish line too is to keep moving forward!
You can do SO MANY amazing things only when you are ready!! How fast you allow your business to grow and how badly you want to succeed can only be determined by YOU! Focus on YOU first and everything will fall into place!
